Scripture: Matthew 28:1-20

DAY 8 - Name Above All Names

A name holds deep significance—it's tied to one’s identity. When parents choose a name for their child, there’s often purpose and intention behind it. In a sense, naming a child could be seen as a form of prophecy, shaping the child’s future. Imagine what Joseph must have felt when the angel Gabriel told him in Matthew 1:21 that Mary would give birth to a son and, “...you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” In that moment, did Joseph fully understand that Jesus was destined to be a savior?

Now, as we reach the end of this Holy Week devotional, we reflect on an event that forever altered the course of history. Out of everything we’ve explored in the past week, I want to emphasize one crucial point: The name of Jesus demands a response. When people hear his name, just like the disciples in verse 17, some will worship, some will doubt, some will curse, and others will repent. Some will adore him, but a day will come when Philippians 2:9-11 will come to pass:

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Throughout this Holy Week, we’ve come to know Jesus in many ways: King of Zion, Son of David, Son of Man, Messiah, Man of Sorrows, Lamb of God, and Friend of Sinners and Sufferers. But all of these titles point to one undeniable truth: He is the Name Above All Names. And here’s the beautiful part: For those who acknowledge and surrender to Jesus, his name becomes their new identity. As 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For our sake, he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

As you meditate on the many names and titles of Jesus, may your heart be filled with gratitude and praise, declaring, “Hallelujah, every voice will proclaim there is no higher name!

Knowing now that your identity is rooted in the name of Jesus, how will you live out your identity as a follower of Christ? What changes need to be made in your life so that you can reflect the character of Jesus in all you do?
