WEEK 1 DAY 4

Chosen By Grace

Devotional
There's a profound truth hidden in Jesus' approach to calling disciples. He didn't go to the religious elite, the scholarly, or the obviously qualified. He went to fishermen—ordinary working people who would recognize the extraordinary privilege of being chosen. This reveals something essential about discipleship: it begins with Jesus' initiative, not ours. We don't earn the right to follow Him; He invites us by grace. The fishermen didn't have impressive spiritual resumes or perfect moral records. They were chosen simply because Jesus wanted them.

This is liberating news! It means our discipleship journey isn't founded on our performance or qualifications. It's founded on Jesus' gracious choice to include us in His mission. We don't follow to earn His approval; we follow because we already have it.

Peter's later story beautifully illustrates this truth. Despite his failures and denials, Jesus' grace sustained him. Peter would learn that the same grace that initiated his call would carry him through every stumble and fall.

Today, remember that you're not a disciple because you're exceptionally good, but because Jesus is exceptionally gracious. This frees you to follow Him with confidence, knowing that His grace will sustain you through every step of the journey.

Bible Verse
"Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them," - Matthew 4:21

Reflection Question
How does understanding that Jesus chose you by grace, not because of your qualifications, change how you approach following Him? In what areas do you need to rely more on His grace rather than your own efforts?

Quote
Jesus initiates discipleship as a privileged gift of grace.

Prayer
Jesus, thank You for choosing me not because I deserved it, but because of Your grace. Help me to live in the freedom of knowing I don't have to earn Your love. When I fail, remind me that the same grace that called me will sustain me. Give me confidence to follow You not based on my strength, but on Your unfailing grace. Amen.
