WEEK 8 DAY 5

The Call to Follow Regardless of Cost

Devotional
After restoring Peter, Jesus didn't offer him a comfortable retirement from discipleship. Instead, He gave him a sobering prediction about his future martyrdom, followed by the same simple command He'd given at the beginning: "Follow me." This reveals a profound truth—restoration always leads back to the fundamental call of discipleship.
Following Jesus comes with costs that vary for each disciple. For Peter, it would eventually mean crucifixion. For others, the cost might involve rejection, financial sacrifice, career limitations, or family tension. Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy—only that it would be worth it.

When we stumble and Jesus restores us, we might be tempted to follow more cautiously, holding back parts of ourselves to avoid further pain or failure. But Jesus calls restored disciples to full commitment, not partial devotion.

Today, consider what following Jesus is costing you. Are there areas where you're hesitating to follow completely? Remember that whatever the cost of following Jesus, the cost of not following Him is infinitely greater. Resilient disciples recognize that Jesus alone is worthy of our complete devotion.

Bible Verse
"Jesus said to him, 'Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.' (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, 'Follow me.'" - John 21:17-19

Reflection Question
What specific costs of discipleship are you finding most challenging right now, and how might remembering the worth of Jesus help you embrace those costs?

Quote
"Every disciple is called to follow Jesus, regardless of the cost. Regardless of the cost. It is definitely worth it."

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the privilege of following You, even when it comes with a cost. Give me the courage to follow You completely, holding nothing back. When I'm tempted to take an easier path, remind me that You alone are worthy of my full devotion. Help me to be a resilient disciple who gets back up after falling and continues following You, regardless of the cost. Amen.
