WEEK 7 DAY 4
The Lies We Believe About Rest
Devotional
We've been fed a steady diet of lies about rest: "If you rest, you're lazy." "If you rest, you'll let everyone down." "If you rest, things will fall apart." These whispers from the enemy have convinced us that our worth is tied to our productivity and that the world depends on our constant activity. But here's the truth: workaholism is the only disease people will applaud all the way to your grave. We've created an addiction to work because we're constantly trying to earn our worth through achievements. We stay busy because we don't know how to be still with ourselves and with God. Workaholism is really functional atheism. When we can't stop working, we're essentially saying, "God, I've got this." We're claiming to be the fixer, the healer, the savior—roles that belong to God alone. The reason we don't physically rest is because we don't spiritually trust God with the things we think are all about our control and ability. We believe the lie that everything depends on us, when the truth is that God is perfectly capable of handling our responsibilities while we rest. If you're involved in ministry or work and you can't stop to rest, you're essentially claiming to be God. It's time to recognize this for what it is and choose trust over control.
Bible Verse
'He lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat." He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.' - 1 Kings 19:5-6
Reflection Question
Which lie about rest do you struggle with most, and how is it affecting your relationship with God?
Quote
We've been taught if we rest, we're lazy. We've been taught if we rest, we'll let everybody else down. We've been taught if we rest, things will fall apart. These are lies from Satan.
Prayer
God, expose the lies I've believed about rest and help me to trust You with the things I think depend on me. Teach me that my worth comes from You, not my productivity.
